Design careers are rarely linear. They’re a mix of strategic moves, impactful work, and seizing the right opportunities. Today, let’s talk about what it takes to get noticed—whether by design leaders, stakeholders, or your team—and how you can position yourself for growth.
When I asked Michael Carrick, CEO of Experience Design Systems recently about how they choose whom to promote, their answer was clear: “It’s not just about talent—it’s about the impact they make on the team and the business.”
This perspective is echoed by many: career growth hinges on more than individual brilliance. Let’s explore how to stand out.
First, consider how you contribute beyond your designs. A designer who creates stunning visuals but doesn’t collaborate well or understand the broader business goals won’t outpace someone who bridges gaps and drives solutions. For example, one designer I worked with recently identified inefficiencies in the design-developer handoff process. Their proactive approach didn’t just save time—it positioned them as a problem-solver.
Stakeholder Relationships: The Overlooked Skill
One of the most underappreciated skills in design is managing stakeholders. The ability to communicate your work in terms of business value is crucial. Imagine presenting a redesign of a dashboard—you could talk about how it’s more visually balanced, or you could highlight that the updated flow reduced task completion time by 30%. Which do you think resonates more?
A designer I know recently secured buy-in for a major project by preparing a short, data-backed presentation tailored to the priorities of the stakeholders in the room. They didn’t just share designs; they told a story of impact.
Growth Opportunities Are Everywhere
Growth isn’t always about promotions or new roles. Sometimes it’s about how you tackle your current projects. Have you taken the lead in organizing a usability test? Have you facilitated a critique where diverse voices were heard? Leadership isn’t just a title—it’s a set of actions.
A great exercise for reflection: think about a recent project. Did you push for user research? Did you adapt based on feedback? Did you bring fresh ideas to the table that elevated the outcome? Write these moments down. They’re your evidence of growth.

Portfolios That Speak Volumes
Your portfolio isn’t just a showcase—it’s your professional narrative. Leaders reviewing your work want to see:
Your Decision-Making Process: What constraints did you face, and how did you navigate them?
Collaboration: Who did you work with, and how did you align goals?
Impact: What measurable results did your designs achieve?
One designer’s portfolio I admired recently had a simple yet powerful format: each project included a section called “What I Learned.” It highlighted their growth mindset and ability to reflect.
Final Thoughts
Advancing your career doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the sum of small, consistent actions: improving your communication, broadening your skills, and thinking strategically about your work. Remember, it’s not just about what you do—it’s about how you make others feel and the value you bring to the table.
This week, think about one way you can stretch yourself. Maybe it’s leading a conversation, refining your portfolio, or simply reaching out to someone for feedback. Those steps compound over time.
Keep creating,
Kirk McNeill
